Direct Support Professional/Direct Support Staff

Job Description:

Direct Support Staff (DSS)/Professionals (DSP)

Duties:

 

  • Provides training, retention and improvement in the area of self-help, socialization, adaptive and job skills for each individual attending New Directions Georgia.

  • Provides training, retraining or improving access to and use of community resources by individuals attending New Directions Georgia.

  • Supports and implements the behavioral support plans of individuals attending New Directions Georgia to reduce inappropriate and/or maladaptive behaviors and to acquire alternative adaptive skills and behaviors

  • Provides active support to each individual’s participation in the daily activities through increased used of social and communication skills.

  • Provides a safe environment for all by preventing accidents, and caring for New Directions Georgia’s property by insuring that the facility is safe, tidy and clean.

  • Attends and participates in staff training for employees of New Directions Georgia in accordance with the policies and procedures.

    Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age – verified by drivers license

  • Must have a high school or college diploma – verified by a copy of diploma

  • Three years’ experience in service delivery to persons with developmental disabilities

  • Two years experience working with individuals having the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder. New Directions Georgia will verify all experience.

  • Be able to prove citizenship or legal residence in the US

  • Be able to communicate effectively by listening to others and express ideas both

    orally and in writing.

  • Be able to understand problems and make timely practical decisions.

  • Be effective in time management by initiating independent actins within prescribed limits

  • Be willing to attend staff trainings both before and after starting at New Directions Georgia

  • Be able to adapt to change when necessary to fulfill the duties of working with individuals with developmental delays.

  • Be dependable, neat in appearance and use appropriate personal hygiene.

  • Be able to provide a clear MVR and insurance.

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds

  • Be able to be part of a team; assist other peer staff members by sharing knowledge and peer training with newer peers.

    Competencies:

    New Directions Georgia will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring the DSS/DSP meets his/her above assigned responsibilities utilizing the below performance indicators.

    Performance indicators of the responsibilities listed are as follows:

  • Knowledge of Work - Consider employee's skill level, knowledge and understanding of all phases of the job and those requiring improved skills and/or experience.

  • Communication - Measures effectiveness in listening to others, expressing ideas, both orally and in writing and providing relevant and timely information to the director, co- workers, and individuals.

  • Teamwork - Measures how well this individual gets along with fellow employees, respects the rights of other employees and shows a cooperative spirit.

  • Decision Making/Problem Solving - Measures effectiveness in understanding problems and making timely, practical decisions.

  • Independent Action - Measures effectiveness in time management; initiative and independent action within prescribed limits.

  • Job Knowledge - Measures effectiveness in keeping knowledgeable of methods, techniques and skills required in own job and related functions.

  • Managing Change and Improvement - Measures effectiveness in initiating changes, adapting to necessary changes from old methods when they are no longer practical, identifying new methods and generating improvement in facility's performance.

  • Customer Responsiveness - Measures responsiveness and courtesy in dealing with individuals and internal staff, employee projects a courteous manner.

  • Personal Appearance - Measures neatness and personal hygiene appropriate to position.

  • Dependability - Measures how well employee complies with instructions and performs under unusual circumstances; consider record of attendance and punctuality.

  • Safety - Measures individual's work habits and attitudes as they apply to working safely. Consider their contribution to accident prevention, safety awareness, ability to care for New Directions Georgia property and keep facility safe and tidy.

  • Employee's Responsiveness - Measures responsiveness in completing job tasks in a timely manner.

    Expectations Regarding Quality and Quantity of work:

It is our belief that all individuals can continue learning social, adaptive, communication and work skills with the help of creative instruction. Our job as the staff or New Directions Georgia is to create an environment of high expectations and excitement for learning these skills that will result in higher levels of acceptance within the community. In order to accomplish this we are willing to work together to achieve our shared goal, continue ongoing training, Look for opportunities to make improvements, being dependable, providing excellence in service and respect to our individuals and other staff members, while being mindful of safety, confidentiality and time management.

Hours: 6 hours per day
Pay: $8-10/hour

Training:

All employees at New Directions must be trained and show competence in the following before reporting for work the first day:

  1. The purpose, scope of services, supports, care and treatment offered including related policies and procedures.

  2. HIPAA and Confidentiality of individual information, both written and spoken

  3. Rights and Responsibilities of individuals served at New Directions

  4. Requirements for recognizing and mandatory reporting suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of any individual:

    1. To the DBHDD

    2. Within the organization

c. To law enforcement agencies

Within the first 60 days from date of hire, all staff having direct contact with individuals will receive training in the following:

  1. Person centered values, principles and approaches

  2. A Holistic approach for providing care, supports and service for the individual

  3. Medical, physical, behavioral and social needs and characteristics for the individuals served

  4. Human Rights and Responsibilities *

  5. Promoting positive, appropriate and responsive relationships with individuals served and their families

  6. The utilization of:

    1. Communication Skills *

    2. Behavioral Support and Crisis Intervention techniques to de-escalate challenging and unsafe behaviors *

    3. Nationally benchmarked techniques for safe utilization of emergency interventions of last resort*

    4. The Georgia Crisis Response System

  7. Ethnics, cultural preferences and awareness

  8. Fire safety*

  9. Emergency and disaster plans and procedures*

  10. Techniques of Standard Precautions, including:

    1. Preventative measure to minimize risk HIV

    2. Current information as published by the Centers for Disease Control

    3. Approaches to individual education

  11. First aid and safety

  12. BCLS including both written and hands on competency training

  13. Specific individual medications and their side effects *

  14. Suicide Prevention Skills Training

  15. Ethics and Corporate Compliance.

  16. Training to work with individuals who have co-occuring / are Dually diagnosed as appropriate.
